An inductive, cross-disciplinary framework for modeling complementary structure, transformation, and knowledge
Excerpt
A new white paper introduces the Polarity Modeling Framework (PMF), a structural approach to modeling relationships among measurable, relational, and interpretive aspects across physics, biology, and mind. The framework is inductively grounded, minimally axiomatic, and designed for progressive formalization and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Introduction
This post introduces a new white paper proposing the Polarity Modeling Framework (PMF)—a cross-disciplinary structural modeling approach intended to address recurring challenges in relating matter, life, and mind.
The framework is presented as a modeling approach rather than a completed ontology, with an emphasis on inductive support, structural clarity, and progressive formalization.
Core Idea
Across physics, biology, and mind, a recurring structural pattern can be observed:
- measurable, extended processes
- relational, formal, and interpretive structures
These aspects are not independent. They are co-essential for organization and intelligibility.
PMF models this relationship using irreducible polarity, where complementary aspects are:
- mutually defining
- non-separable
- dynamically co-determining
What PMF Introduces
The framework develops a minimal set of structural constructs:
- Polarity axes (σ) — complementary differentiations
- Polarity systems (Π) — interacting axes
- Fields (F) — structured spaces
- Positions (x) — configurations within fields
- Transformations (T) — structured change
It also introduces:
- Covariance — structured co-variation
- Coupling — degree and mode of interaction
Epistemology and Knowledge
PMF extends into epistemology by modeling knowledge as structured through polarity:
- subject–object
- particular–universal
- abstract–concrete
Knowing is treated as navigation within structured fields, and observation as participatory and transformative.
Application to Mind and Consciousness
The domain of mind provides a concrete instantiation of the framework:
- experience modeled as a structured field
- phenomenal–psychological polarity
- attention as transformation
- reflexivity as recursive structure
This domain makes key aspects of the framework directly accessible in experience.
Axiomatic Foundation
A minimal set of Polarity Axioms is introduced to support formal development while avoiding premature commitment to specific mathematical or geometric representations.
Research Direction
This work is intended as a starting point for:
- formal development
- empirical investigation
- cross-disciplinary collaboration

This work is part of ongoing research through the Open Autonomous Intelligence Initiative (OAII) and is shared with the goal of inviting critique, collaboration, and further development.
At this time it is not yet decided if the PMF will be incorporated in the base model or a class or reference implimenations.
